Growing herbs in your garden can be a great way to get fresh herbs for cooking or medicinal purposes. In many cases you can grow them right in with your other flowers, or keep them in containers so that you can bring them inside in the winter months for a bountiful indoor herb garden.
Herbs can be perennials or biennials so you need to plant them with this in mind. Calling contractors to have your house repaired means footing huge bills -- not to mention the inconvenience of having workmen in your house for days on end. And then there are time overruns, delay in supply of material and other conditions.
People with a little artistic leaning may just take the chisel and the trowel in their own hands and repair minor cracks (and in some cases, even major cracks) in their house foundations themselves. There are a surfeit of TV programs and books on the subject – and don’t even lets get started on the number of websites pertaining to house repair. However, before attempting to repair the house yourself, you must judge a few things.
Of primary importance is the availability of time and patience. For first timers, repairing foundations doesn’t come easy. The mortar might just not hold in the crack the first several dozen times. It requires tremendous patience, and like everything else, one proceeds to perfect this task with experience. You have t o work out whether you can devote so many days from your calendar to complete the job. Be realistic in evaluating your skills; ascertain yourself whether you’ll be capable to finish the job. It does not work if you have to leave your mission midway and scan through the yellow pages for a professional to come and repair the mess you have done. For starters, that would only increase the cost manifold. You should also check whether all the required tools are available, whether you have no social occasions to celebrate in your house on those days and other such tiny factors.
At a minimum, repairing the house yourself will require arming yourself with cement, sand, mortar and tools like a trowel (both pointing and plastering), hammer and chisel, screwdriver, drills, wire-brush and such other sundry tools. For a small foundation crack, first chisel away part of the mortar. Use a wire-brush to wipe away the dust and dried mortar pieces. Prepare the mortar mixture using two parts of builder’s sand with one part of cement. Use builder’s grade cement for better adhesion. Prepare the mixture with minimal amount of water, taking care that there is perfect blending of the cement and the sand.
With a pointing trowel, embed the mixture into the crack. Slowly and gradually, work your way along the crack, taking all precaution that there are no loose air gaps left in the crack. Use a wooden flat surface to flatten out the mortar before it dries up. Once the filling is done, leave the filled crack for drying. This will need two or three sprinklings with water so that the mixture can expand and fill the crack well. When it is completely dry (after about 2 days), paint on the surface.
However, if it is a crack in a tile, then the entire tile needs to be replaced. The procedure is entirely different if it is a leakage crack. In that case, the tiles have to be replaced and a drain tile has to be fitted with a sump-pump attachment to draw out the water.
Before attempting a do-it-yourself repair job, it is prudent to estimate the cost with a professional. The seriousness of the crack is another issue. There are also other things to be considered, such as electric wiring (if they pass through that area) and plumbing.

When rounding up your packing supplies, one cost effective way to get free boxes with the cells in them is by asking your local bar or liquor store for empty boxes because most liquor boxes already have these cell dividers inside the box.
Sort, select, and simplify the packing process by going through each cupboard, drawer, and shelf to divide the kitchen into items you are taking with you and items you are leaving behind, donating, or selling before the move.
Once you have decided which items need to be packed and which items you want to leave behind, prepare an essentials box by putting aside the things you will need for your last two days in your current home and for the first two days that you are in your new home. Items to include are dishes, flatware, cutlery, an all-purpose cooking pot, food items, appliances such as the coffee maker and toaster, dishtowels, a dishrag or sponge, dish soap and other various cleaners.
Next, go through your cupboards and drawers and pack the items you do not frequently use or do not need on a daily basis.

I'd also recommend that you start making a list of items that will go in your "Open First" box. This will consist of belongings you'll want immediate access to when you move. Why now? As you go about your day-to-day living, you'll notice what things you'll want or need right away when you get to your new home.
By now, you might be feeling overwhelmed. You have the supplies and know which items to pack, but how do you pack them? How do you organize the boxes? What's the best way to pack so you'll be able to find things? Here are a few ideas and systems to use when packing. Pick and choose the ones that work for you.
For example, #1 box goes into the living room. If you want to get more specific and later list the entire contents in each box, you'll need to label them #1a, #1b, and so on.
Go a step further and use a different color for each room, so write Living Room in red on each box that will go in the living room in your new home. You could also use colored stickers instead of writing in red. You can also combine the number system with the room names described here (for added security).
Write a detailed list of items in each box and either attach it to the outside, keep it in a binder, or both. I recommend both. If you do this, you'll need to number each box individually, or if you use the number system, with a number for each room, you'll need to label boxes as 1a, 1b, etc.
This is more for major, big, or valuable items.
If you must pack it, assign it a code word so that you don't advertise the fact that the box contains jewelry.
A master list allows you to consult your list if you need something once you move or while you are still selling and have items packed away in storage. For example, let's say you need that second set of dishes due to an unexpected party you decide to throw, you would look at your master list and see that "Extra Dishware" is in Box 2. You can get as specific as you like. You can do a master binder in two ways. If you write a detailed list of what's in each box, you can attach one list to the box and add one to your binder.
A second idea is to take it a step further. Take all those items, add them to one big list, and put it in alphabetical order. Then, you'll have one big list of all your home's contents on one list, in one place. This sounds complicated but is all very easy to do with computers.
If you need a certain item and your master list tells you that item is in Box #2a, and you know that all #2 boxes are labeled in red (because kitchen boxes are labeled in red) it will help you find it easier.
For example, "Kitchen is in red numbers at the back left of Pod."
If you are a bit unsure about a box or two, seal the box partially, but don't make it difficult to open if you may need something out of it. Also, make sure to put those types of boxes in an accessible spot in the storage unit or Pod. Once you are ready to move, go back and thoroughly seal the boxes that need it.
These are just ideas. Use what works for you. Pick and choose and coordinate what works. Just make sure of 2 things: you keep it consistent, and everyone understands the system.

Here are my top tips for packing. You can use these even if you aren't staging. But when staging, it is better to pack yourself. • Have a Checklist. This is perhaps one of the most important things you can do to keep yourself organized. Find a spot where you will keep boxes for two time periods. Second, find a spot for when you are finished packing and need to store the boxes until you are ready to actually move. • Prepare an "Open First'' Box. Label one box "Open First". Here is where you'll put those things you'll need right away. It varies with each family, but may include toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, bed sheets, paper plates, plastic silverware and cups, medications (or at least enough for a week), snacks and drinks (especially if you have kids), hand soap, change of clothes, shower and personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, flashlight,battery-powered lantern (just in case there are problems with the power), light bulbs, garbage bags, tools and scissors, house phone, cell phone chargers, any important documents and receipts, a list of important phone numbers, and a to-do list for the next day.
• Develop a Box Labeling System. This will vary depending on your needs, situation, and the size of your family. Here are some things I recommend. Pick and choose the ones that match your style and situation.
○ Use large colored labels or stickers to designate what room the boxes should be placed in at the new home. This will make loading and unloading go quicker for movers or your own personal helpers. Make sure to have a printed master key list for each color.
○ Use the colored labels on the boxes and you could also write the rooms on the labels but that might be redundant. Another option is to use permanent markers, designating different colors for each room, and write the room name on each box in that specific color.
○ Write the overall idea of what's in the box, for example linens and towels.
○ Another idea is to get more specific and give each box a number, in addition to a room designation. Then, on a separate sheet of paper, write down all the contents you are putting in each box and be very specific.
• If you have fragile items, make sure to write that on each box and you might even want to draw an arrow to point which way is up on the boxes.
• Reserve and Label Boxes for Pets and Children
This is a very stressful time for both kids and pets. Make sure to have all their items in one spot so that you know where to find their favorite items. You might want to put some type of label or ribbon or some sort to signal to movers which boxes you'd like loaded last so they can be unloaded first.
• Use the appropriate packing materials, suggestions, and strategies to minimize breakage.
• Here are some packing options to protect items: bubble wrap, blankets, mattress covers, moving pads, packing paper, packing tape, and stretch wrap. You can also use your own sheets and blankets as packing material for items like glasses and dishes.
• Try to keep boxes to 50 pounds or less. The biggest problem people run into is with books. They really do weigh a lot. Use small boxes for books or you'll never be able to lift them.
• For items that need to be taken apart or that have lots of pieces (furniture or curtain rods with all their attachments), make sure to secure all small pieces in a plastic bag (sandwich, quart, or gallon) and attach securely to the item. Another idea is to pack one box with all hardware and small pieces and clearly label each bag with what item it belongs to and where it goes.
• If you are taking apart items that may be difficult to put back together you can do a few things: make sure you have the original manual, download or order one from the manufacturer, or take pictures to take it apart.
• Packing when staging follows the natural progression of sensible packing. Pack out of season items first, followed by less frequently used items, and so on and so on. And don't pack anything you don't want or need and think you'll eventually throw out. Why pay movers to move items you're going to get rid of?
• Get supplies in advance
Make sure you get all the supplies you need, especially boxes. You can order supplies from just about anywhere. Find out how the pricing works, whether you can return unused boxes, if shipping is included, and how long shipping will take.I have found supplies to be more expensive when purchased from the major moving companies or the chains or local retailers that rent moving trucks.
One of my favorites is Used Cardboard Boxes. They use recycled cardboard, ship for free, and will usually deliver in 1-2 days. I've used them more than once and have been very satisfied with the products and service.
They, along with most places, are now offering packages that include a variety of packing items, including different-sized boxes, packing tape, tape dispensers, markers, box cutters, packing supplies like bubble wrap, and more. Some have set packages, while others let you pick and choose.
I recommend measuring out the dimensions of each size box using items at home so that you get an idea of what each size looks like.
Check grocery and liquor stores. They are often looking to get rid of boxes for free. If you do a lot of online shopping, start saving the delivery boxes. Make sure boxes are sturdy and secure and that they are able to be closed and sealed completely.
Find out in advance if there are items movers will not move. Most moving companies have a list on their website of items they don't want to move or are prohibited from moving by law. They also have a list of items they recommend you take with you rather than loading onto the truck, such as cash and jewelry.
When packing, put heavier items on the bottom, lighter ones on top, and don't leave empty spaces in the box. Fill any empty spaces with blankets, towels, clothing, or newspaper. • Additional Tips

You can also use small stickers when moving electronics with multiple cords. Place corresponding stickers on the cord and on the place where it attaches on the device. It might also help to take pictures while taking the item apart.
Don't label boxes as electronics or valuables to reduce the temptation for theft. Make a master inventory list for yourself and which items are in each box. For valuables, you might come up with code words to use instead of the actual names of the items. Even take pictures of the boxes before sealing. This is helpful in the event of theft.
